No matter what anyone tells you, the assertion of the latest guidelines around just how far to go when it comes to sexuality in schools as being left vs right or hate vs good is not the truth. The truth is that the reality is more complex.

If you think about it, this is not an easy topic for adults to approach with one another. This isn’t an easy topic for a group of adults to just get together and agree upon how far the topic will go.

So agreeing upon how far these conversations should go for kids? And, for how long?

That’s difficult.

Even in rooms where people have similar belief systems, birth years, genders, socioeconomic groups etc…..

Now imagine parents balancing their own belief systems, values, home situations (divorced, separated, homeless, tension between the parent/parent unit, interfaith,…) and now wondering just how far this curriculum wants to go. And, whether it is now informing them of the new curriculum or giving them a choice.

Parents are simply demanding more time for dialogue, input, expert weigh-ins, research, and listening to students.  Parents across the nation are demanding more input in their child’s education and are tired of being called “hateful” for getting involved and taking an interest.

Parents send their children to school with their own school supplies, open minds and their own set of family values, cultures, beliefs, and expectations.

And they demand to be heard and respected.

So, this is great reporting of the parental divide in Montgomery County, MD right now when it comes to religious groups & disagreement around how sexuality is taught in schools.

This Muslim-led coalition included Ethiopian groups as well.

Parents here are diverse & known to be engaged in kids’ education.

As always credit where credit is due:

The Coalition of Virtue helped to organize this large rally of 500 people at Montgomery County Public Schools Board of Education.

The rally was attended by Muslims, as well as the Ethiopian Orthodox community, and many other supporters.
