In Protecting the Gift: Keeping Children and Teenagers Safe, expert Gavin de Becker highlights how predators sometimes “test the waters” with young girls over the phone to assess their vulnerability.
He explains how his research and interviews with predators exposed many of their tactics. Including their landline days phone tactics. Men would randomly make phone calls in the hopes that a young girl would answer the phone.
They would use these calls to trick the girl into giving them information about themselves and their family.
They would also try to gain information about her willingness to protect her boundaries. Would she say, “no” to an adult male? Would she correct them if they were wrong? Or would she politely go along? Be nice. Be kind.
This con allows predators to gauge whether the child might be an easier target without immediate detection. De Becker advises parents to be vigilant about such tactics and to ensure children are educated about inappropriate conversations and empowered to end them confidently if they occur.
Predators are con-men.
