I try to monitor the amount of negativity I take in per day. So it took me a few days to hear that it was Colorado GOP Representative Lauren Boebert who voted against and mocked the passage of the Crown Act.
The United States of America continues to attempt to micro-manage the divinely created hair strands of Black women.
While too many people say, “it’s just hairrrr”, Black women face sexist and racist criticism around our hair from all directions.
Passing the Crown Act is not even hard & doesn’t ask much from anyone. And yet, white lawmakers *keep* failing to support the #CrownAct while simultaneously denying racism & sexism.
Advice, critiques, criticism, and mocking videos around the unique beauty and behavior of Black women’s hair isn’t hard to come by.
But, I make it a life rule to take no opinions, tips, or advice on Black women’s hair seriously from people who don’t know about & staunchly support the passage of the CROWNAct. Criticism is around Black hair is LOUD but support, embrace, and love for Black hair is barely a whisper.
The fact that Black women have to put up this much struggle and fight just to wear the hair that we were born with, should concern more people.
I was one of the readers for the submissions to the book, “Chicken Soup for the African-American Woman’s Soul”.
So many compelling submissions from writers with stories abt their experiences as a Black woman with uniquely textured hair.
Listen to Black women’s stories.
If you support the Crown Act, please turn up the volume.
