In earlier years of this blog, I did more work that included males as victims. I was excited. The blog allowed me to show the truth of my work. Whether my work was on a crisis hotline, in court as an advocate, or responding on-site to someone who had just been assaulted; I have always assisted male victims.
Not nearly as many men and boys as girls and women but no matter what, I serve victims of violence and abuse.
While I still care very much for male victims, and ALWAYS will, at some point I began to wonder what men are doing to end rape. Even those who are victims seem to be less concerned with sexual violence prevention. Listen, I tried outreach and recruiting but quite frankly, too many men were content to have a (womanly) shoulder to cry on, to share their story with….. And then, The End.
Of course, not every woman who has been victimized is concerned with ending violence either. And no, it isn’t on Survivors to save the world. Living and surviving, are plenty.
But, when it comes to women, there is certainly enough to fuel a global-wide longstanding movement. Every so often, this movement forms a muscle powerful enough to take a swipe at powerful male offenders perched at the top of the social ladders. (#MeToo) It’s a challenging feat and proof that the Survivors are much stronger than most assume us to be.
This Chapter
So, my most recent years’ work has been more focused on women and children ….AND encouraging men to become more proactive in ending violence. Especially when it comes to using their platforms and media outlets.
If we as women continue to do the bulk of the social labor, we rob men of learning valuable lessons, making necessary connections, and opportunities for growth and change.
Already women are the predominant caretakers and nurturers for children, the elderly, the disabled, and the sick and shut-in of nearly all communities.
We need men to do their part to join us in the fight to end this violence.
Every single man in every community can make it better and safer.
Every single man in every community must make it better and safer.
Men can stop rape.
