When people discuss domestic violence, they often focus on the emotional and physical impacts on human Survivors. Yet, there is another layer of suffering that frequently goes unnoticed—the heartbreaking situation many survivors face when their cherished pets are also at risk.

For countless Survivors, pets are much more than animals—they are family. They provide love, comfort, and stability in the midst of chaos. Unfortunately, abusers often exploit this bond, using pets as a means of control. The threat of harm or the fear of losing a pet can keep survivors trapped in unsafe situations much longer than they should be.

The statistics are powerful. Studies reveal that up to 71% of pet owners entering domestic violence shelters report that their abuser harmed, threatened, or even killed a pet. Additionally, nearly 50% of survivors delay leaving an abusive environment out of fear for their pets’ safety. When pets are considered family, abandoning them is simply not an option.

Thankfully, more organizations are recognizing this critical barrier to safety. They are stepping in to help Survivors and their pets find safety—together. Here are some essential resources that make a significant difference:

1. Temporary Pet Shelters and Safe Havens

Some domestic violence shelters now collaborate with animal shelters or have facilities that allow survivors to bring pets with them. These programs offer temporary housing and care for pets, giving survivors the opportunity to seek safety without leaving their pets behind.

  • The Purple Leash Project: A partnership between Purina and RedRover that supports domestic violence shelters in becoming pet-friendly. Their aim is to ensure that 25% of shelters are pet-friendly by 2025.
  • Safe Havens Mapping Project: This resource lists shelters and organizations that provide temporary care for pets of survivors.

2. Pet Fostering Programs

For Survivors who cannot take their pets directly to a shelter, pet fostering programs are life-changing. These programs find loving foster homes for pets until their owners are safe and ready for reunification.

  • Sheltering Animals & Families Together (SAF-T): An initiative that encourages domestic violence shelters to accommodate pets.
  • RedRover’s Safe Escape Grants: These grants help cover the cost of boarding or fostering pets while survivors seek refuge.

3. Legal Protections for Pets

In many regions, restraining orders can now include pets, protecting them from harm or abduction by abusers. Survivors should inquire about these protections when seeking legal help.

4. Community Support and Advocacy

It takes a collective effort to provide comprehensive support. If you or someone you know is a survivor with pets, reach out to local animal shelters, veterinarians, or domestic violence agencies to learn about available resources. Community advocacy is also crucial in encouraging local shelters to expand their services to include pets.

Why This Matters

The emotional bond between survivors and their pets can play a crucial role in healing. Ensuring pets’ safety protects not only animals but also the emotional well-being of survivors. This support is fundamental to their journey toward healing and independence.

No one should have to choose between their safety and the safety of their pets. By raising awareness and supporting pet-friendly domestic violence services, we can remove yet another barrier that keeps survivors in harmful situations.
