We keep doing that thing that we have always done. We are not listening to women and girls. And when we do here pieces of what they are saying here and there, we try to talk the women and girls out of their intuition, the lessons that they have learned by heart from lived experience, and from common sense.

- Lived experience outweighs theory. Women have spent EVERY DAY inside their own bodies, navigating girlhood, menstruation, pregnancy risk, safety calculations, and social expectations from childhood on. No outside framework, however well-intentioned, carries that same firsthand data.
- The explaining rarely goes both ways. Women are expected to sit through explanations of what womanhood “really means,” but the reverse — women explaining manhood to men — almost never happens with the same confidence or frequency. That asymmetry itself is telling.
- It often erases material reality. Womanhood isn’t just an identity or a feeling — historically and globally it’s been tied to concrete conditions: reproductive labor, wage gaps, violence rates, legal restrictions. Explanations that skip past that reduce it to something abstract.
- It repeats a very old pattern. Women being told what they are, what they want, and what they should feel by people outside their experience is not new — it’s a pattern going back centuries. The specific explainer changes; the dynamic doesn’t.
- It treats a diverse group as if it needs a single definition. Women are not a monolith — different cultures, classes, races, and generations of women have different relationships to womanhood. A tidy outside explanation tends to flatten that diversity into one convenient narrative.
- It shifts authority away from the people most affected. When someone else gets to define a category, they also get to decide who belongs in it and what obligations come with it. Women losing that authority over their own definition has real consequences for their autonomy.
It isn’t just in the West of course, conversations from women everywhere around the world are being hijacked by males in high and low places trying to tell women what our concerns and priorities “should” be. This is dangerous. Even the UN has begun to gradually acknowledge that WORLDWIDE, womens rights have begun to regress. Erode if you will.
Women are LIVING that. We knew before the UN got around to announcing it. Of all the people on the planet, women have been the people most likely to encourage, nurture, shield, and love others. The fact that that isn’t being reciprocated is now having consequences.
*Note: Women mansplain at women too. When we
- dehumanize women and girls,
- silence women and girls,
- minimize the goals,
- feelings and aspirations of women and girls,
- and decenter women’s safety,
…..we are speaking ancient predatory male language. Articulately.
