Break out the Nail Polish!
Take a little nail polish and dab a small dot on your cell phone.
This is a reminder to calm down and relax before you answer your phone.
Now, when you see that colored dot, pause, take a deep breath, and (optional) smile before you answer your phone or text.
ALTERNATE: Use a permanent marker instead of nail polish.
Drink and Be Merry!
According to WebMD, just 2 glasses of orange juice each day can significantly lower your cortisol level.
Cortisol is known as the stress hormone, and regulating it can significantly reduce the possibility of stress.
Start Chewing
Research conducted by Dr. Andrew Scholey in 2008 shows that chewing gum can also “reduce anxiety and depression”.
Hmph. Who knew?
It also increases your alertness. So, keep some gum handy at home, at work, beside the laptop, tablet, cellphone, by the mailboxâŠâŠ
Sing! Sing!
One thing that you might pick up as a victim of abuse is the ability to distract yourself from the atrocities going on around you.
One fortunate thing that you gain as a Survivor of abuse is the ability to embrace the survival skills that you learned.
One of those skills is the ability to shift your thinking, especially during stressful times.

Sing along if you know the words. You can also hum until you do.
Laugh
No matter what, find something to laugh about every single day. Find a video clip or share a funny memory with a friend.
Perhaps you can watch a funny scripted show online or on television.
Treat laughing like something you have to do. Like medication that you have to take.
Be that serious about getting in your laughter each day.
Give back
I can tell you that, no matter what you lack, you can give back.

âȘSkills
âȘItems you donât mind parting with
âȘWisdom
âȘExperience
Just because you may not be getting paid to do it, presently, doesnât mean it isnât highly valuable to someone.
You may never know how much what you gave meant to someone.
Know that we ALL need one another at some point in this life.
Survivors by necessity have to come up with creative ways to survive one day and thrive the next. Perhaps some of these tips that we share amongst one another can others who arenât Survivors get through seriously difficult times.
