“Where are all the feminists?”

I abhor this question.

People say “feminists” but we all know that they mean women.

“Women come clean up this mess on aisle 7 that male-dominated leadership made.”

But for argument’s sake, I’d like to take it on today….

Silencing Tactics Evolve

I don’t mind challenge.

It sharpens you.

It makes you better.

I embrace it.

I welcome the discomfort.  Not to be confused with disrespect and violence, but the discomfort of disagreement that seeks compromise and solution.

But what we’re dealing with in this era of social media is not sharpening and improving.  It is a demand for compliance and submission. And no one side has clean hands in this.

Like David Tennant told you, even those males on the left want women to cease to exist but they will accept your silence as consolation.

X

Various people on X(formerly Twitter) have noticed a targeted censorship pattern.

  • As of this morning, former Labour councilor & director of LGBAlliance Ann M. Sinnott’s account has been suspended. Her account on X often addressed gender and policy.
  • Low visibility for tweets for certain accounts
  • Odd and random suspensions
  • Accusations of sensitive content for content that clearly is not
  •  “Bots” following accounts and mass reporting them as “spam”.
  • Accounts “stuck” at a certain number
  • Unfollowing accounts that you have not unfollowed.
  • Meanwhile, porn accounts and people who threaten violence are left untouched.

I’ve experienced most of these tactics ……and it led me to seek out premium private spaces online.  Blocking, muting, and unfollowing worked for a short while but it wasn’t enough.

There is a growing demand from people on social media for everyone to think and believe exactly the same way with a teeny bit of wiggle room. There are no other options.

At least one platform that I am a regular on continues to violate me for “adult content.” Of course, I stay in contact with them.

And, X is not the only one dealing with these tactics. Gays Against Groomers announced that they have been banned from 15 different platforms. Most recently, that now includes Reddit.

It is important to note that people who support women’s and girl’s rights are not the only targets.  This week a Black female fitness influencer that I follow made a video short expressing her frustration about being reported for content violations.

For most of her followers, this was surprising to learn.  Her workout attire is quite modest. She rarely speaks in her videos. It is simply she and her cat in a sparse but cozy basement.
Privacy is a Valuable Tool
I still enjoy social media, because I enjoy the good folks that are still left. But having your own private spaces online  IS the only way to go.  Premium spaces where you and others make the house rules.

It is like having your own living space.
Your own neighborhood.
Your own personal hangouts.
Your own cookouts where a select few sent out the invitations.

Against Conditioning

It is easy to get confused.
Being GenX saved me on this one.
Some people grew up with access to a smartphone from toddler days.

On the other hand, some from GenX (me) know what it is like not to have access to cable or even a telephone in the house. (One bill had to go). I still remember walking to the pay phone in the neighborhood to make phone calls. I’m 52.

We actually had to go out of the house and connect with people directly.  Eye to eye. Soul to soul.

That’s been a special saving grace recently.

I get the confusion if you were social media was in effect from the day you were born. Mainstream media reports on someone and highlights the number of social media followers.

….Predicting that a political candidate will win by a landslide because they have 20x the number of social media followers as the other candidate. The next morning you wake up and find out the alleged “little known” (on social media) candidate defeated the incumbent as if no one ever heard of them before.

You do not have to believe that the only way to sell your products and services is via social media. People were thriving in business long before social media.  People are still thriving today without ever clicking on social media.

One need only look to reality television to see the danger in allowing other mass people’s marketing tactics cloud your judgment and relationship with reality.

While some people measure success by “followers”, “likes” and “reposts”, it is important to remember that that is a conditioning tactic and a marketing message.

Your talent, your skill, your value, your worth, and your impact are not determined by social media metrics.

Putting the determination of your value in the hands of others is dangerous.

Where Are All the Feminists?

Because I’m in these circles, I can confidently tell you this:
Doing. The. Work. that should have been done.

If these services aren’t for you, more are popping up daily including more affordable options including the option to purchase your own software and run the platform yourself or with a group.

In the meantime, keep in mind that old-school strategies still work.
  • Teleseminars,
  • in-person seminars,
  • webinars,
  • walking clubs,
  • ministry groups,
  • healing circles
  • book clubs
  • newsletters
  • mail that the postman  delivers
The work, the service, the love…..is where you are; even if no one sees it or approves of it online.

Social media is a tool, not the tool. As in all things, the most important resource or tool you have is “you”.
