A few years ago, I was shopping in a grocery store when I noticed a spot on the back of another woman’s scrubs. She was walking confidently through the aisle, completely unaware.

I picked up my pace and hurried to catch up with her.

When I reached her, I leaned in and quietly let her know what I had noticed. An older woman standing nearby smiled gently and whispered that she had been about to do the very same thing.

The woman in the scrubs was mortified.

We immediately reassured her that there was nothing to be ashamed of. It happens. Then we began looking around for the nearest restroom.

As we walked, the older woman happened to have a lightweight scarf draped over her shoulders. Without hesitation, she removed it and handed it to the woman, who wrapped it around her waist. The two of us walked alongside her, doing our best to shield her from unnecessary attention until she reached the restroom.

None of us knew one another.

None of us had planned to meet that day.

Yet for those few minutes, we became exactly what women have always been for one another: a quiet circle of protection.

Moments like this happen every day among women who might otherwise remain strangers.

A woman quietly passes another a sanitary pad or tampon. (Yes, it is creepy and strange coming from a man. Many women would never….Not our fault blame the entire human history of men behaving dangerously)

Someone offers an over-the-counter pain reliever for unexpected cramps.

A tissue appears before tears have a chance to fall.

Advice is shared.

Stories are exchanged.

Embarrassment is prevented before it has the opportunity to grow.

These acts may seem small, but together they create something extraordinary. They are expressions of trust, shared experience, and mutual care.

In the company of other women, these kindnesses can often be offered without the added concern of being sexualized, mocked, manipulated, recorded, or exploited during a vulnerable moment.

That is one of the many reasons women continue to value spaces where they can simply look after one another.

Sometimes protection doesn’t arrive with sirens or headlines.

Sometimes it arrives as a whispered warning… and a borrowed scarf.

Why Women and Girls Need Single-Sex Spaces

Single-sex spaces are not about exclusion. They are about ensuring that women and girls have places where they can experience privacy, dignity, safety, healing, and belonging with other female human beings.

Privacy and Dignity

Women and girls deserve spaces where they can care for deeply personal aspects of their lives without the presence of males.

These include moments such as:

  • Managing menstrual periods, including unexpectedly heavy bleeding.
  • Changing menstrual products.
  • Adjusting or changing clothing and undergarments.
  • Recovering from a miscarriage.
  • Giving birth or receiving postpartum care.
  • Addressing female reproductive health conditions.
  • Handling the ordinary but sometimes embarrassing realities of being female.

Privacy is not shame. Privacy is dignity.

Physical Safety

Sometimes a woman or girl simply needs to get away.

Single-sex spaces provide temporary refuge when someone is:

  • Being followed.
  • Escaping a stalker.
  • Avoiding an abusive partner or ex-partner.
  • Feeling threatened or intimidated.
  • Looking for immediate assistance from other women.

These spaces allow women to protect one another until the danger has passed.

Healing After Violence

Many women and girls carry the effects of domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking, trafficking, harassment, or other forms of abuse.

Single-sex spaces make it easier to:

  • Participate in support groups.
  • Step into a quiet room to regain emotional composure.
  • Share painful experiences with people who understand.
  • Develop practical safety strategies.
  • Begin healing without fear of ridicule, intimidation, or unwanted attention.

For many Survivors, healing requires emotional safety as much as physical safety.

Shared Experience and Understanding

Women often need places where they can simply talk openly with one another.

Single-sex spaces allow women and girls to:

  • Discuss embarrassing situations.
  • Exchange practical advice.
  • Validate one another’s experiences.
  • Share knowledge about female health and daily life.
  • Build friendships rooted in common experience.

Not every conversation needs to be explained to someone who has never lived it.

Freedom From Male Domination

Women and girls deserve environments where they can fully participate without having to navigate male-centered social dynamics.

Single-sex spaces reduce the likelihood of:

  • Being spoken over.
  • Being mocked or mimicked.
  • Being belittled.
  • Being sexually objectified.
  • Being intimidated.
  • Being threatened with violence.
  • Having their concerns dismissed.

Removing these barriers allows women and girls to participate more confidently and more freely.

Leadership and Personal Growth

Girls and women thrive when they have opportunities to develop among other females.

Single-sex environments encourage:

  • Confidence.
  • Leadership.
  • Skill development.
  • Honest discussion.
  • Mentorship.
  • Healthy peer relationships.

These spaces allow women and girls to explore who they are without competing for attention or adapting themselves to male expectations.

Community and Belonging

Single-sex spaces strengthen relationships among women and girls.

They create opportunities to:

  • Encourage one another.
  • Share wisdom across generations.
  • Build trust.
  • Celebrate achievements.
  • Support one another through difficult seasons.

Connection is a form of protection.

Protection From Exploitation

Women and girls have legitimate reasons to want places where males are not present.

Single-sex spaces reduce the risk of:

  • Voyeurism.
  • Secret recording.
  • Sexual exploitation.
  • Opportunistic harassment.
  • Certain forms of physical assault.

While no space can eliminate every risk, limiting access to females helps preserve privacy and reduces opportunities for abuse.

Sanctuary

Every society should preserve places where women and girls can simply exist as themselves.

Places where they can breathe.

Places where they can laugh.

Places where they can cry.

Places where they can gather strength.

Single-sex spaces recognize a simple truth: women and girls have experiences, vulnerabilities, and needs that are uniquely female. Respecting those realities is not discrimination. It is one way a society protects dignity, privacy, safety, and human flourishing.

Women and girls have a human
right to dignity and safety.
At all times. Despite male feelings. And it is not “hate” to say any of this. In fact, deniers of these basics to women and girls are the true haters of 50% of the population on this planet.  Listen to women and girls.
You have chosen to lie
for a man you respect.

I have chosen to tell the truth
for all the women I’ve never met.
