Some lies don’t look like lies.
They wear the clothing of “tradition,” “culture,” “love,” or “femininity.”
But if you look closer, you’ll see the bruises they leave behind.

Here are 10 dangerous beliefs that have harmed women across time, language, and land—beliefs passed down like folklore, buried like landmines in our stories, our laws, our households, and our faiths.

We name them here so we can bury the belief instead of the woman.

1. “A woman’s greatest power is her ability to endure.”

This lie rewards suffering. It canonizes self-abandonment.
But survival isn’t about how much a woman can take—it’s about how loudly she can reclaim what’s hers. Her body. Her joy. Her time. Her boundaries. Her life.

Ex expectation: (Strangulation during sex, enduring violence and abuse to keep the family together)

2. “Good women forgive everything.”

Women are told that forgiveness is holy. But too often, it’s used as a tool to silence them, pressure them, and erase their right to justice.
Forgiveness is a choice. Not a requirement for being seen as worthy of love, peace, or healing.

Ex expectation: (Violent and/or controlling men just need a “good woman” to help THEM. She will suffer but this is all for the greater good you see. *(their opinions, which they freely share*)

3. “A woman is safest when she is chosen.”

Chosen by a man. A marriage. A job. A religion. A leader.
But too many women have been chosen—and still hurt. Safety doesn’t come from being chosen. It comes from being respected. Protected. Free.

Ex expectation: A woman should stay in a relationship where people fall in love with the story of them. He saw her and chose her. He chased her. She’s now his “prize trophy.”

4. Men’s violence is natural. Women must adapt.”

This belief shows up in advice like “Don’t dress like that. Don’t walk alone. Don’t provoke him. Don’t be difficult.”
It’s the normalization of fear. And it forces women to shrink themselves for the comfort of the violent.

Ex expectation: Men are free to be violent. Jealously is “in their nature.” Domination is “in their nature.” What goes unsaid is that women’s nature is expected to be docile, submissive, easy-going, and never having an opinion or point of view that conflicts with his.

5. “Mothers must suffer for their children.”

This belief sacrifices women on the altar of motherhood.
But children are not healed by a mother who is broken.
They are healed by a mother who is whole, protected, and allowed to live her truth.

Ex expectation: (Back to enduring. It’s up to women to make things work within a violent relationship AND outside of it. If co-parenting is a nightmare, it goes unsaid, but women are expected to keep things civil even in the face of stalking, control, and abuse tactics.)

6. “A woman’s silence is graceful.”

No. A woman’s silence is often coerced. Threatened. Trained.
She’s called “strong” for staying quiet when what she really needs is safety to speak—and to be heard without punishment.

Ex expectation: Women’s strength is celebrated at family, faith & employment gatherings. Where “strength” means she had to put up with some of the worst disrespect, minimizing, bullying, harassment, stalking, violence, and abuse ever. People are thrilled, though, that they didn’t have to adequately address it. So see? Strength.)

7. “A man’s reputation is more important than a woman’s safety.”

This is the lie that built entire legal systems.
That protects abusers. That silences whistleblowers. That elevates “potential” over pain.
This belief doesn’t just kill voices. It kills women.

Ex expectation: (“Don’t embarrass him. Don’t accuse him. Don’t assume the worst. Be compassionate. Give him a chance. And another one. And another one. And another one too. He didn’t mean anything by it. Think about how rejection makes him feel.

You’re a woman or girl. What feelings?”)

8. “Women are naturally jealous of each other.”

A convenient myth that keeps women divided. Distrusting.
When in reality, women often protect one another, believe one another, and carry each other through hell.
The real fear? What happens when women unite.

Ex expectations: (As long as women are divided, it makes it easier for us to be dominated, controlled, and fed inaccurate information that maintains the division. Competition can also fuel insecurity. Women do not win this game.)

9. “It’s not abuse if he provides for her.”

This is the lie that turns money into a weapon. That justifies control. That hides violence behind the mask of security.
Provision is not protection when it’s transactional, conditional, or violent.

Ex expectation: (Even well-known sports commentators have stated on television that a woman alleging violence from her dating partner or spouse shouldn’t “stand in his way” or “mess up his opportunities.” She’s living well. She’s lving a wealthy life. Whatever comes with that she must accept it. But support can also mean “he helps you take care of the children.” “He has the skills to take care of your car.” If the situation is slightly improved then and the children are expected to endure.)

10. “A woman must be likable to be believed.”

The perfect victim. The right tone. The soft eyes. The clean history.
This belief keeps women performing instead of testifying.
But trauma doesn’t always come wrapped in a bow. Neither does truth.

Ex expectation: (It is challenging for people to hear the straight truth from women. Everyone can KNOW that women/a woman are telling the truth but because she said it, they will even create a reason to be against it.)

When we talk about these expectations, remember that it includes everyone’s expectations. It includes our judges who let people who harm women off with less than a slap on the wrist.

It includes professionals, trained in child development even, who expect girls to endure, suffer, and de-prioritize their own needs for boys.

It includes people who will not even acknowledge knowing that a woman is an adult human female even though every human on the planet was nurtured from a woman’s body for at least several months or more. If you will not speak even that basic foundational life-giving truth….

Women carry deep, painful, and profound truths about this world, truths that will not become less true because society finds them uncomfortable to face. Some of them challenge what we have been taught, what we desperately want to believe, and even what we wish were possible. Facing them requires more than compassion for women and girls. It requires courage.

We burn these lies at the root.
Because women are not here to be shrines to silence, objects of sacrifice, or trophies for endurance.

We are here to live. Loudly. Safely. With full agency.
And we will not apologize for unlearning what was never sacred in the first place.
