These days when people are pretty casual and complacent about women’s identity and women’s essence being mocked, adopted, and ultimately …owned; I think of women like Esther Jones. A woman who had her entire essence stolen from her. A woman who had to live her days watching others profit from her essence and creation.

The idea that there are no consequences to this should be carefully reconsidered. You can’t ever surrender anything believing that you’ll just get it back if you ever need it. If you surrender it, make sure that you do not need it.

History has taught us these lessons before.

In this world, what you do not lay claim to will be stolen from you and used to make someone else wealthy and more comfortable than you and your entire line of kin combined.

Esther Jones lived in a time when women, especially Black women, did not have the privilege to assert ownership over what she worked hard to develop.
