You didn’t ignore the neighborhood strays when you were sitting out on the porch. At first, their restless energy just seemed like play, but there was a rhythm to their panic. They knew. Long before your nose could catch that metallic tang of an approaching storm, they were already hunkering down for the downpour. Ignore them if you want to. It would only take once or twice of coming home dripping wet before you learned to to do that anymore. Patterns and noticing are critical to survival.

Shift….

Back when I started watching the career of Doechii, I knew these days would come. Knew that her talent, her uniqueness, and innovative artistic courage could raise criticism from parts never even heard from before. And still they would proclaim themselves, “experts” in what she should be doing.

I wrote a post about her then and then pulled back because it seemed the coast was clear?  I think that is why you see others from my generation embracing her too. Young people may interpret it as her being a “plant” because they don’t have our years and lens. But I’m almost certain that they saw it too.

This is a worn out re-run that no one deserves.

Anyway, letting the music play…..

This performance grabbed my attention. Miss Lauryn Hill is highly selective about who she shares her creative space with so this was amazing for Doechii. And like Doechii is apt to do, she put flames on it.

Some of the members of younger generations misunderstand the power of Miss Lauryn Hill. The 1990s was an AMAZING time in music. We were loving it. And…..”Doo Wop That Thing” was a call to self awareness within our groove.

  • Lauryn Hill expanded a genre that was already expansive.
  • True to the core of soul music she brought in cultural analysis and  relationship analysis.
  • She brought in spirituality, self evolution, and vulnerability. She was human and yes, that means highlights and flaws.
  • She sings, produces, writes, and raps….one just as well as the other.

Dancing. Vibing. Courageously looking deep within. Calling ourselves out. And, ever rising.

*Lauryn Hill does not get enough credit for her iconic fashion and style contributions to music and entertainment. Lauryn Hill crowns herself and every single time I listen to her music she challenges me as woman to do the same.

*And Doechi is hot on her iconic fashion and style heels. Love, love, love.
