This is the last week of Black History Month 2024 and I have only one message for Black girls and young Black women:

Be YOU unapologetically.

Just this month we have seen Black and biracial women who have achieved great things attract the most criticism:

Nara Smith
Fani Willis

joining Black women who are always among the most highly criticized and highest achieving human beings:

Serena Williams
Taraji P. Henson
Oprah
Michelle Obama
Meghan Markle
Kamala Harris

Viola Davis
Beyonce
Shirley Chisholm
Isabel Sanford
Anita Hill

Audre Lorde
Fannie Lou Hamer
Ella Baker
Rosa Parks
Alice Walker (for authoring “The Color Purple”)
Vanessa Williams
Minnie Ripperton

Patti Labelle

Sade
Anita Baker
Toni Braxton
Donna Summer
Janet Jackson

Whitney Houston
Cicely Tyson
Eartha Kitt
Nina Simone
Phyllis Hyman
Hazel Scott

Hattie McDaniel
Mahalia Jackson

Beautiful and beloved,

you can look like,

earn like,

speak like,

pray like,

achieve like,

create like,

develop like,

win like,
marry like,

& live like others want you to…..and

if you are a Black or biracial woman, folks may still launch entire campaigns just to complain.

Therefore, I hereby suggest:

“You might as well just go on
and be you without apology
..and love doing it!”
