š§ Group Loyalty Bias (GLB), in simple terms:

Dysfunctional families or other circles behave the same way.
Itās a mental shortcut where we:
Protect our people
Defend our groupās image
Ignore or minimize harm if it comes from āone of usā
š¬ Youāve seen it before:
āHeās a good guy. He would neverā¦ā
āSheās done so much for the community.ā
āWe donāt need to air this in front of outsiders.ā
āDonāt ruin their life over a mistake.ā
š§² Why Itās So Easy to Fall Into
We want to believe the best of people close to us
We fear outsiders using the harm to judge our whole group
We think loyalty = protection, even if harm has occurred
š§© Where It Shows Up:
In families (“Uncle wouldnāt do that.”)
In faith spaces (“Not Pastor.”)
In cultural groups (“We already face so much. Donāt add to it.”)
In celebrity fandoms (“Heās an icon. Give him his respect.”)
In activism spaces (“Theyāve fought for us. They donāt deserve this.”)
šØ Why This Matters in Abuse Cases
When someone is harmed and we respond with:
Weāre not being neutral.
Weāre protecting the image of the group, not the well-being of the harmed person.
šš½āāļø But What If Youāve Done This?
You’re not alone. I am not immune. Because I am human, I might do it again. (Prayerfully, I will not dig in so deep I can’t be reached by reason and logic. Keep your circle filled with the wise.)
Group loyalty bias is human. It lives in our need to belong, survive, and stay safe together.
But when we become aware of it, we can choose a different pathāone that centers truth, safety, and real accountability.
š§ A Healthier Response:
āIf harm occurred, I want to know the truth.ā
āWe can love someone and still hold them accountable.ā
āProtecting the group should never mean silencing the harmed.ā
š± Final Thought:
Group loyalty bias is not evil, but it has a tendency to devolve in that direction if no one speaks up.Ā
It becomes dangerous when itās used to mute pain or protect power.
We donāt have to abandon our people.
We just have to stop abandoning our values.
