When a male accuses another male of sexual harassment or assault, what do we often hear first?

“The worst part is people are going to call him gay.”
“Get ready for the jokes.”
“That’s so embarrassing for him.”

Just like that, we lose focus.

We forget there’s a Survivor in the room.
We ignore the pain it took to come forward.
We skip past the courage.
We miss the suffering.
We silence the truth.

All because we’re more concerned about how others might perceive the accused
than we are about the trauma that’s been exposed.

💔 This Is How We Betray Male Survivors

When people shift the conversation from harm done to sexual orientation speculation, they do several damaging things at once:

  • They deflect attention away from the abuse

  • They reinforce stigma around same-sex violence

  • They pressure male Survivors to keep silent to avoid public humiliation

  • They suggest that the real issue is being seen as gay, not the assault itself

Let’s be clear:
Being gay is not the insult.
Assaulting someone is.

🔇 The Silencing Starts Here

This kind of public misdirection makes it nearly impossible for other men to come forward—especially in communities where masculinity is policed with cruelty.

We place a heavy, painful burden on male Survivors of same-sex abuse:

  • Don’t cry.

  • Don’t speak.

  • Don’t “make it awkward.”

  • Don’t say who did it.

  • Don’t ruin his life.

  • Don’t let anyone think you’re gay.

This is not care.
This is emotional coercion disguised as concern.

📢 What We Must Say Instead:

  • “I believe you.”

  • “You did the right thing by speaking up.”

  • “Your pain matters. Your truth matters.”

  • “We are not going to let shame silence you.”

Because every Survivor deserves safety, support, and dignity.
Not just the ones whose stories make us comfortable.
Not just the ones who match our assumptions.

🔥 To Those Who Joke Instead of Listen:

You are making it harder for someone else to survive.
You are creating an environment where abuse continues unchecked.
You are helping no one—not even the accused—by mocking trauma.

If you care about men and boys, you must be brave enough to care about their safety.
Even when the story doesn’t fit your narrative.
Even when the victim is another man.

🕊️ Final Word

No one should have to suffer in silence because our society is too fragile to handle the truth.
Male Survivors of same-sex abuse are not jokes.
They are not weak.
They are not less-than.
They are Survivors.

And here, they are seen.
