New Wars Against Women Require New Strategies

Breaking these chains requires a multi-layered approach that includes self-liberation, community support, and cultural shifts. Black women can break free from these harmful expectations by reclaiming autonomy, healing from internalized oppression, and setting new standards for how they are treated.

1. Reclaim Rest & Softness Without Guilt

  • Reject the “strong Black woman” burden – Strength is valuable, but it shouldn’t mean endless labor and sacrifice.
  • Prioritize joy and leisure – Black women deserve to exist beyond survival mode. Engage in hobbies, self-care, and relaxation unapologetically.
  • Protect rest as a right – Just as work is expected, so should be rest. Sleep, stillness, and emotional peace are non-negotiable.

2. Set Boundaries & Enforce Them Firmly

  • Say NO without guilt – You don’t owe your time, labor, or energy to anyone just because society expects it.
  • Recognize manipulation tactics – If someone shames you for resting or choosing yourself, they are benefiting from your exhaustion.
  • Release obligations that don’t serve you – You are not responsible for fixing grown men or carrying entire communities alone.

3. Heal from Generational & Personal Trauma

  • Therapy & Healing Work – Trauma is stored in the body. Seek therapy, journaling, or spiritual work to release it.
  • Ancestral Healing – Honor ancestors who were forced to serve by choosing a different path—one of self-care and freedom.
  • Affirm Your Worth – Speak affirmations daily: “My labor is not a debt to anyone. I am free.”

4. Build & Support Sisterhood

  • Surround yourself with aligned Black women – Spaces where Black women affirm and uplift each other are essential for unlearning harmful narratives.
  • Share knowledge and wisdom – Talk about these issues openly so the next generation doesn’t inherit them.
  • Call out & reject harmful messaging – Whether from family, media, or community, challenge the idea that Black women are here to serve everyone else before themselves.

5. Hold Men & Society Accountable

  • Demand reciprocity – If men expect labor from you, ask what they are providing in return. If the answer is “nothing,” remove yourself.
  • Teach sons and younger boys differently – The cycle ends when boys learn that Black women are human beings, not servants.
  • Reject harmful cultural narratives – Whether in relationships, workplaces, or families, refuse to accept the expectation that Black women must work harder and receive less.

6. Create a New Narrative

  • Redefine what it means to be a Black woman – A Black woman is free, whole, and valued beyond what she gives to others.
  • Embrace feminine autonomy – Whether that means being soft, powerful, independent, or anything in between—Black women deserve choice.
  • Celebrate and amplify alternative representations – Seek out and uplift stories of Black women choosing themselves and thriving on their own terms.

Breaking these chains isn’t easy, but every time a Black woman prioritizes herself, rests without apology, and demands respect, she is shifting the culture. Freedom begins with the decision to no longer be the mule of the world.
